The 2016 Awards

LETTER OF APPRECIATION

Floral Displays at Weymouth Station and Ranelagh Road

A Letter of Appreciation has been awarded to Brian and Janna Coomber.  On his own initiative and at his own expense, Mr Coomber set about creating floral beds around Weymouth Station and in the adjacent Ranelagh Road about twelve years ago.  Ever since then the displays have been maintained by himself and Mrs Coomber.  We recognise the major contribution they have made, over many years, to improving the appearance of this important part of Weymouth, where many visitors gain their first impression of the resort.


Civic Society Awards

Each year, members of the Civic Society look out for projects to be considered for our annual awards. We look for high quality new developments, or restorations of historic buildings or features that make a contribution to the appearance and general quality of the local environment. Suggestions may include domestic, commercial or public buildings or landscape features, and may vary in size from a large housing scheme to a small but noticeable improvement to a single building in a “tired” area. The selected schemes must be completed during the year to October, and be situated within the general area of Weymouth, Portland and Chickerell.
The 2016 awards were announced and presented at the Nothe Fort on 21st November.
Thanks are due to Brenda Pickett and Dawn Barnes, who organised the event, and the Nothe Fort Volunteers and staff (particularly Chef Jill) who prepared the venue.

THE ANNUAL AWARD

Harbour Lights Court - Retirement Apartments - North Quay


Awarded to McCarthy & Stone in recognition of the significant contribution made by the Harbour Lights development to the character and appearance of the Weymouth Inner Harbour area.

This new complex of 43 retirement apartments was constructed on the site of the former Weymouth Fire Station.  The design was carefully planned, with attention paid to recreating the character of Old Weymouth, complementing the houses and cottages nearby.  It gives the appearance of a traditional grouping of individual harbourside houses yet, by ingenious design, incorporates within it the normal apartments and facilities.

This unique development has greatly enhanced the setting of the Inner Harbour, transforming the rather dark and gloomy appearance of this corner with a variety of attractive frontages.  The South elevation has also made an outstanding contribution to the ambience of High West Street at the rear of the property, particularly to the setting of the historic Old Town Hall and Boot Inn.


The design team was led by Ben Pentreath Ltd. and the planning agent was The Planning Bureau Ltd.


CERTIFICATE OF MERIT

“Windmills” - New Housing Development, Portland


Awarded to Betterment Properties (Weymouth) Ltd. This new housing development has been constructed at Park Road, Easton, on the site of Portland Stone Firms’ former masonry works.  It comprises a well-proportioned crescent, forming a backdrop to the landscaped grounds surrounding the open space of Tesco’s car park, as well as a terrace of houses fronting Park Road.  This attractive grouping of buildings, in light coloured render and Portland stone, is sympathetic in character and materials to traditional Portland houses.

The fine overall design includes tower features, echoing the two historic windmills nearby.  With its careful detailing, this development adds quality and interest to the area and, together with the drystone walling, sits well in the local landscape.

COMMENDATION

Radipole Manor - Restoration


Awarded to Jason Harding. This substantial Victorian manor house sits in wooded grounds behind the Tudor manor house near the church in Radipole Village.  Both house and grounds had been neglected and decaying over many years.  The Commendation is awarded for the long-term restoration of this important manor house – a major undertaking carried out with commendable perseverance, ensuring continuity with the past.  The details of the structure have been carefully refurbished or re-created where necessary.  The garden and terrace have been greatly enhanced and, with the addition of a balustrade, they provide a fine setting for the house.  The new gate piers on Radipole Lane are impressive for the quality of the masonry, and their design echoes the style and materials of the original entrance.

Masonry services were provided by Tudor Rose Masonry & Conservation Ltd.


COMMENDATION

40 Dorchester Road - Restoration


Awarded to Michael Seal. This listed house is part of an important grouping of ‘Regency’ villas on Dorchester Road near Lodmoor Hill, together with the Roman Catholic Church, all of a period around 1830.  The owner has made welcome improvements which are to be commended, including the restoration of the balcony, with its iron balustrade and veranda roof, and other period details.  It is good to see care being taken to maintain its historic character, which sadly has been lost in other properties in this long sequence of similar houses, which runs from the former Weymouth College to the Lodmoor Hill shops.

COMMENDATION

8 Portland Road, Wyke Regis - Restoration


Awarded to Dr. Keith Holdaway and Maxine Foster. This listed historic house situated on Portland Road near Wyke Church was, in times gone by, the Fisherman’s Arms Inn.    The new owners have carried out extensive - but unobtrusive - restoration work, with thorough attention to detail, including new windows in keeping with its period character.  In particular the important south end wall has been greatly improved, with traditional rendering instead of the former bare brick and stonework with unsuitable thick pointing, and this has dramatically enhanced the approach to the Church and Wyke Village from Portland Road. The Architectural Consultant was Neil Worthington of W4 Projects, and the Building Contractors were Cooke Construction Ltd.

LETTER OF APPRECIATION

Greenhill Gardens

Awarded to Weymouth and Portland Borough Council.

This Letter of Appreciation is given in recognition of the works that have been carried out in Greenhill Gardens.  These include the maintenance and refurbishment of the historic Bennett’s Shelter, which was donated following the Armistice at the end of the First World War.The line of gaily painted timber chalets in the gardens nearby, dating from 1929, suffered heavy damage in
 2015 when the end two chalets were destroyed in a fire.The prompt reconstruction of these two chalets by the Council is most commendable. They match the materials and design exactly, so that they blend seamlessly with the original terrace of chalets. The regular planting and general care of these attractive Gardens in the current straitened circumstances is also praiseworthy.

COMMENDATION

“The View” - 459 Chickerell Road - New Houses


This pair of detached houses has been constructed on the west side of Chickerell Road on the site of a former single house, number 459.  They are of contemporary design, carefully thought out, with light coloured rendered walling and simple windows, which make for clean lines and an uncluttered appearance.  While incorporating modern features, they respect the scale and character of the neighbouring buildings. Commendable attention has been paid to energy efficiency. The developers were Calibre Developments (GB) Limited, and they were designed by Fisher & Associates.

LETTER OF APPRECIATION

Borough Council’s Gardens and Esplanade Flower Beds

Awarded to Weymouth and Portland Borough Council

This Letter of Appreciation recognises the planting and regular maintenance of the Gardens in the Borough and the Esplanade flower beds, despite the severely limited budget available. They continue to delight the eye and are greatly enjoyed by both residents and visitors alike. The Gardens include Radipole Park Gardens, Lodmoor Country Park, Greenhill Gardens, Nothe Gardens and Sandsfoot Castle Gardens in Weymouth, and Victoria Gardens and Easton Square on Portland. The gardens are maintained by the Borough Council’s Parks and Open Spaces Service.
