PRESS RELEASE 19 MARCH 2008RETIREMENT OF PRESIDENT OF WEYMOUTH CIVIC SOCIETY Long serving president of the Weymouth Civic Society G.A.J. (Jack) Rumble has retired after 17 years. He told the 40 members who attended the society’s annual general meeting that he had already decided to relinquish his role to allow someone new to lead the society at a key time in the town’s development. Jack Rumble has played an important part in the Society’s projects through the years. He was chairman from 1972 until 1989 during which time the Tudor House, owned by the Society, was first opened to the public. In 1980, he played a key role when the Society undertook the mammoth task of reconstructing and repairing the Nothe Fort making it into Weymouth’s largest tourist attraction. It had 34,000 visitors last year and this summer plans more evening events and attractions to swell the attendance figures. His successor, elected at the meeting, is Mrs. Pru Bollam, a previous chairman for five years from 1990. She also heads up the Society’ recently formed Pavilion Site Action Group pledged to oppose the excessive elements in the proposed redevelopment plan. She told members the action group is joining forces with Our Weymouth to establish a united opposition front drawing on strengths and experience from both organizations. Our Weymouth has already collected 6,000 signatures for the petition demanding a public enquiry into the development proposals. It will be handed in to the Weymouth and Portland Borough Council at a later date. Derek Cope, society chairman for the last three years, stood down at the meeting and thiis position will be filled at a later date. -ends-
